What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a routine dental procedure designed to save a tooth. When the inner part of the tooth (the pulp) becomes compromised due to decay or damage, it may need clearing out. A root canal involves removing the inner pulp and sealing the interior tooth to keep it alive and healthy.

Patients may need a root canal if:
  • Bacteria has entered the tooth
  • A tooth has severe decay
  • An injury cracked the tooth

How to Get a Root Canal

Consultation
We start by taking a look at the tooth. Ideally, it will still be in good enough condition for a root canal. We do offer extractions as alternatives, but we keep those as last-resort options.
We administer local anesthetic (so you feel no pain) and then use a drill to clear out the inner tooth. We take extra care to ensure no bacteria remain inside.
We then fill the tooth with gutta-percha and seal it either with a filling or cover it with a crown. The right option for you will depend on the amount of healthy tooth that remains.

Root Canal FAQs

What causes root canal infections?

Root canal infections can have several causes. Most often, they are the result of deep cavities, dental trauma, or previous unsuccessful dental treatments.

This is the first question we receive from most patients. Emphatically, a root canal treatment should not be painful. Modern techniques and local numbing turn it into a mild experience similar to getting a filling.
Patients who need a root canal tend to be able to feel it. When bacteria get inside the tooth, it can cause notable pain, swelling, gum discoloration, and more. Call our office and we can get you in for a quick visit to examine your situation.
The cost of a root canal can vary slightly, depending on each patient’s unique situation. For example, sealing a tooth with a crown can cost more than with resin. Fortunately, almost all insurance plans provide good coverage for root canal treatments. We also offer financing options to open care up to a wide range of patients.

Initial recovery from the root canal procedure takes approximately 1 to 2 weeks. During this time, soreness and sensitivity should subside. Full healing of the surrounding bone and tissue will take longer, with the exact timeline depending on the severity of the infection and your individual healing factors.

If the natural tooth is salvageable, saving it with a root canal is preferable to tooth extraction. Our dentists will conduct a thorough assessment of your dental health to determine the best option for you.

Root canal therapy has a success rate of 86% to 98%. With a proper dental care routine, teeth treated with a root canal can last a lifetime.
