In this article, we explain emergency dental treatment options for cracked, broken, and knocked-out teeth.
Cracked, Broken, or Knocked-Out Tooth: Emergency Treatment Options Explained
Cracked Teeth and Chipped Teeth
Teeth with mild cracks or chips can often be restored with dental bonding, a procedure that uses a resin composite (the same material used in dental fillings). Additionally, your dentist might be able to reattach a chipped tooth piece if you bring it to the office.
Additionally, chipped teeth or teeth with minor cracks can be restored with dental veneers—thin porcelain or composite shells that cover the entire front sides of the teeth.
We recommend visiting a dental office immediately if you crack or chip a tooth, as in some cases the injury may expose the inner dentin, leading to decay and tooth loss if left unaddressed. Additionally, nerve and root damage can be present, even if you can not see any signs on the surface of the gums.
Broken Teeth
If the dentin of your tooth becomes exposed due to trauma, it is not likely to be restored with bonding or veneers. In the majority of cases, such teeth are treated with root canal therapy and then reinforced with dental crowns.
If your tooth is broken at the gum line, it will likely have to be extracted and then replaced with a bridge or a dental implant.
Dislodged Teeth
A dislodged tooth is still intact but not stable in its socket. If the trauma is addressed promptly (within the first 30 to 60 minutes), a dislodged tooth can be repositioned and will eventually heal. However, we do not recommend attempting to reposition your tooth yourself, as you may damage the nerves. Also, a dislodged tooth is not likely to heal on its own, and professional medical attention is always necessary.
Knocked-Out Teeth
If your tooth is knocked out, it is essential to go to an emergency dental office immediately. If possible, bring the knocked-out tooth to the office, as it may be placed back in its socket and heal over time if you act within 30 to 60 minutes of the accident.
To preserve the knocked-out tooth, place it in a clean container filled with saliva or milk, or use a special over-the-counter tooth-preservation kit. Another option is to keep the tooth in your mouth, between your gum and cheek, but be careful not to swallow it. The main goal is to keep the tooth moist while you are waiting to be admitted to a dental office. However, you should not keep your tooth in water.
Also, it is best to avoid cleaning your tooth unless necessary, in which case you should quickly rinse it with lukewarm water (for under 10 seconds). Never use soap or any other cleaning solutions on your tooth, and do not rub it with cloth, paper towels, or tissues.
In cases where the knocked-out tooth cannot be preserved or restored, your dentist might offer one of the tooth replacement options, such as a dental bridge or a dental implant. These procedures can be done after the impacted area is sufficiently healed.
